Markus Torkki, CEO of Aitosairaala, says the idea behind founding the new hospital was a return to the fundamentals. ”We wanted to take a couple of steps back and bring renewed focus to the things doctors and nurses are actually trained for.”

Aitosairaala is a specialist hospital founded by experienced Finnish surgeons. No room for guesswork in the operating theatre

High quality and patient safety were also the deciding factors when the hospital selected its logistics system. According to Torkki, choosing OC Logistics was clear from the outset. ”When a patient is on the operating table, there’s no time to wonder whether an item is in stock or not. You need to know,” says Torkki.

Head Nurse Markus Sjögren agrees. The orthopaedic hospital’s range includes over 2,000 items, and managing them manually would carry enormous risk.
”When the hospital was being set up, we briefly considered whether we could manage material logistics some other way. But it was only a brief consideration,” says Sjögren. ”For the sake of quality and patient safety, OC Logistics was the only option.”

Automation frees up focus for what matters most

As a practical example, Markus Sjögren highlights how the barcode environment simplifies routine tasks. ”You scan the shelf with a mobile device. If an item is running low, there’s no need to work out which supplier’s online store to order it from. The system sends the order automatically,” Sjögren explains. ”And that means we can focus on what matters most: the patient.”
